Mr. Jan Skora was born in Jaworzno, in Poland.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning at the Technical University in Krakow. He worked as a planner in the Planning Department of the Provincial government in Poland for several years. Delegated as a consultant, he spent three years in Algeria working in the National Planning Office as a project manager. At that time he was responsible for regional planning and urban development of cities and towns in the southern region of Algeria.

Mr. Skora immigrated to Canada and settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1984. For several years he worked in the private sector as an architect. In 1990 he joined Halifax County Municipality as a Planner and subsequently as a Planning Coordinator in Halifax Regional Municipality responsible for Real Estate, Open Space Planning and management of municipal land. In 2016 he retired from public service and established a planning and land management consulting company SKORA LAND DEVELOPMENT CUNSULTING.

He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and serves on Board of Directors for Licensed Professional Planners Association of Nova Scotia (LPPANS). Through all these years he remains an active member of the polish community of Halifax - Dartmouth, coordinating polish cultural events and activities. He is married and has two sons. He is an active member of the Consular Corps of Nova Scotia.

Mr. Skora has received the Nova Scotia Home Award of Excellence in 2000 and 1998, as well as the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 1989. In 1986 he made a significant archaeological discovery in the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Undersecretary of State of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Bogusław Winid handed in the nomination for the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland for Nova Scotia to Mr. Jan Skora on November 17, 2012. In 2016 by order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, the consular district for Consul Skora has been extended to include Province of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

September 2019, Mr. Skora accepted a faculty position at School of Architecture and Planning at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Witold Waszczykowski extended Jan Skora's term as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in the Maritime Provinces for the next five years until 3 November, 2022.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Zbigniew Rau extended Jan Skora's term as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in the Maritime Provinces for the next five years until 4 November, 2027.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Prof. Zbigniew Rau awarded an honorary badge "BENE MERITO" to Hon. Consul Jan Skora for his activities that strengthen Poland's position in the international arena. The badge was presented by Dariusz Wisniewski Consul General in Montreal on Nov 5, 2021.

The Minister of National Defense of Poland, Mariusz Błaszczak awarded a Gold Polish Army Medal to Hon. Consul Jan Skora for his contribution to promote the history and traditions of the Polish Army outside of Poland. The medal was presented by Witold Dzielski, the Polish Ambassador to Canada on August 21, 2022.

The Honourable Arthur LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia awards the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for exceptional qualities, enhancing Nova Scotia’s relationship with the world, along with aiding residents and visitors from Poland to Nova Scotia on November 24, 2022.
